Chasing a Dream

Growing up I wanted to be doctor, a body builder, a truck driver (go figure… I don’t even have a regular driver’s license), a social worker, and so on. Using my imagination as a child, my ultimate dream was to help people. Obviously, I couldn’t figure out what direction I wanted to go. Needless to say, I didn’t choose any of those career paths… I’m not even in a field that is remotely close.

I’m a full-time nonprofit professional and part-time blogger (for now). I have a BA in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism, a minor in English, and a MS in Leadership with a focus on Community. My career path shifted a bit last year, where I went from having my “dream job” to transitioning into a completely different sector of the nonprofit world. If you stick around long enough, you’ll be able to follow along and piece everything together.

During this season of transition, my Wife, JD, was also transitioning within her career… or should I say following her dream of becoming a Soldier in the United States Army. Talk about a proud Wife (points fingers towards myself)! I have always known her to go above and beyond, but this was the icing on the cake… and I LOVE cake. I knew this meant that I should be follower and set out to find my true purpose in life. It took me a while, but I found it… or at least I think so.

I did a little bit of freelancing for a local neighborhood newspaper and I believe that sparked my interest back into writing. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but never knew exactly in what capacity I wanted to write.

So, you may have guessed it by now. Yes, I want to write! Recently, I attended a conference and one of the speaker’s focus was “chasing your wildest dreams” and I knew at that moment that I had to stop procrastinating, waiting on the right time, and just do it. I came back home feeling empowered and ready! As it seems, the time was now or never.

I chose now and guess what ya’ll? I’m finally chasing a dream and I encourage you to get started with yours today, not tomorrow. Don’t put it off anymore and stop with the excuses!

Until next time, I have some writing to do and I need more coffee, so let’s all stop procaffeinating!

  4. I love the idea of being a truck driver too!! Or a cleaner. I don’t know why but both feel like they would be very fulfilling jobs where you get to see a job through to completion. I turned out to be a geoscientist/blogger so quite different haha

  5. Loved this post! I think that it’s odd that everyone is taught to pick one thing they want to be. The people I admire have studied so many things and have more than one role or career. Good lives I think must require lots of skills and experiences. In Ireland there’s a saying “what’s for you, won’t pass you. “

  6. Beautiful family! I’m just starting my writing journey as well so this will be exciting to follow. Also, my little sister is in the Navy on deployment for 5 more months and she has a 16 month old little girl and husband waiting for her at home. So ‘scuse me while I tear up. I’m so proud of her, but miss her so much.
