Hello October 2019

I’m pretty sure I said last month was going to be amazing, but October will be amazing too! For me, October is like the “bees knees” of Fall… and you already know that Fall is our favorite time of year. We ran… well, JD ran and I walked in The Great Pumpkin Run: Virtual and it was a total blast. I was so proud of myself, because I’m not fit (at all). JD has always been my biggest cheerleader, but her support throughout this race was out of this world!

Woohoo! #thegreatpumpkinrun

October brings on another 5k race… drum roll, please! PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE VIRTUAL RUN, join us by clicking on the link. We are going to complete at least one per month, so I’ll be sure to update you soon. We will be sure to stop at Starbucks to get a Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew (with extra cream) after the race. Yassssss!

What do you have going on for October? Fall in general? Now that we are living in the South, we will be outdoors a lot too… hiking, exploring local parks, zoos, and, of course, shopping centers. It’s still very hot here and will be for a while. We are going to soak it up and enjoy the weather while we can. Speaking of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Pumpkin Cream Cold Brews, we are going to grab one to start the first day of October!

Hello September 2019

September is going to be an amazing month! I’m claiming it already, because the last few weeks leading up to this point have been remarkable. Not only is Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) season, but my wife (JD) comes home from training…geez these 11 months have flown by without a doubt! I have been crushing my goals of indulging in a healthier lifestyle. I’m not dieting or anything, just eating better, going to the gym a few times a week and incorporating more movement into my day to day. So far, so good!

In less than a week, we will be exploring our new city and partaking in all the things we love and spending time together. I wouldn’t say “making up for lost time”, but continuing to make magical memories. I can’t wait to grab a PSL from Starbucks, walk the trails by the river playing Pokemon Go and just enjoying being in the presence of one another. Not everyone is into to PSL, what’s your favorite Fall drink? Speaking of Fall, it’s our favorite season and we have a lot of exciting plans lined up already. We hope you join us well into the Fall to see what some of those things are.

Fall 2018

Do you have any favorite Fall traditions? Tell us what they are in the comments. We love to hear about traditions and what other families are doing to spend time together. If you don’t have any favorites, what are some of the things you’d like to do? Share it with us. Our pup, Zoey even has some Fall favorites, checkout her list:

I’m off to make a Fall Bucket list, I certainly can’t wait to check things off.

Ten Years Too Long

Before August ends, I felt compelled to share my perspective on loving, living, learning and leaving Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After graduating from Claflin University in 2009, I knew I wanted to move out of South Carolina. This was the perfect opportunity for me and what I “thought” I wanted to do with my life at the time.

I applied to one grad school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, got accepted and was ready for the big move later that Summer. I never visited Pittsburgh before moving, so it was going to be new for me on every level… people, places, things, etc. I was taking a leap of faith and plunging head first.

Little did I know, there was so much to learn…

Pittsburgh aka The City of Bridges ( my view from my downtown apartment) and my first bus ride on Port Authority Transit.

I was determined to focus on school, start a career, work a few years, and move on. Obviously, that didn’t happen… because guess what? August marks ten years I’ve resided in Pittsburgh… but it’s all changing (for the better), thank goodness.

I met some really awesome people (my wife) and some not so awesome people (trust me, I won’t name any names) *wink wink*, but the timing was perfect! Over the last few months I realized that I was more than ready to leave a city that I still loved, but after a decade, was no longer in love with.

Excuse me while I run to Crazy Mocha (one of my fav local coffee shops) one last time before I go.

Peace out Pittsburgh!

Cleaning Out My Closet

After finding out where our where our First Duty Station will be, I slowly began to devise a plan to begin packing and getting ready for our big move. The time has finally come… time definitely flies when you’re having fun, right? I’ve been known to collect and keep everything, because it’s cute or I “think” I’ll use again, wear it when I lose weight or give it away at some point. Yeah, I am that kind of person (hangs head low). Well, I’m putting an end to that shit… because of new beginnings. I don’t want, nor do I need, to take extra stuff with me into our new home. The plan is to start fresh, so pardon me while I start cleaning out my closet.

Yes, I know I’m a little late to the Spring cleaning party or even separating everything and keeping the things that truly spark joy. If I would have jumped on that wagon, everything I owned would have sparked joy at that particular moment. A part of me is glad I didn’t do it then, so doing it when I’m ready was perfect for me. I know, I know it’s a mental thing and I wouldn’t have been mentally prepared to do it.

We also have a storage unit that has all of our belongings in it, but I had a room full of stuff that I’ve used, or should I say accumulated over the last nine months.
When you do Spring cleaning or plan for a big move, how do devise your plan? Do you #Konmari that shit or just go to town and throw it all away? Alright, I’m gonna get to work, because I have a lot of stuff and I should have done this… yesterday!

Ps. I can imagine my wife sipping her coffee and shaking her head in disbelief as she’s reading this. She knows me best and doesn’t believe me, but I have to start somewhere and this is the perfect way to make that happen.

This Brings Joy To My Life

Over the last few months, I have slowly tapped into a few things that bring joy to my life. Towards the end of March, when I visited my wife she took me bowling with her a Battle Buddies. I was a nervous wreck, more so because I was afraid I’d make a fool of myself and let’s be honest… I thought I’d break a nail. I can’t tell you the last time I’d been bowling, perhaps college. I didn’t do as well as I thought I would, but I pushed myself to at least try and get out of my comfort zone. I had fun nonetheless and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to do it more often. My wife and her Battle Buddies made it their weekend hobby to hit up the bowling alley just about every weekend.

The perfect shot!

Fast forward to April, when she asked me what I wanted for my birthday in May. I usually don’t ask for anything in particular, but this time I told her I wanted my own bowling shoes and personal bag (to match hers, of course) and to go bowling with her Battle Buddies when I came to visit. Well, my amazing wife definitely delivered on the birthday wishes and got me the perfect pair of bowling shoes, personal bag for them, and an awesome afternoon of bowling with her Battle Besties… Yep, they’ve been promoted- friends turned family for sure! I can’t believe it has taken 32 years for me to realize all the things that bring joy to my life, but I am here for it and ready to put fear aside, chase my dreams, and let things happen naturally.

My very own pair of bowling shoes and bag… so much joy!

Can you believe I won the first game? Yeah, me either! Everyone joked that it was my new shoes and I believed them after a few times they said it and of course a few strikes later. I’m excited to tap into other things that truly brings joy to my life, but definitely looking forward to joining a bowling league once we get settled at our First Duty Station (FDS). We decided it would be a perfect Friday Date night, to join just a fun league… nothing too serious just yet.

Yes, we are always super matchy matchy!

It has been awesome to find something that brings so much joy to my life, like bowling does! Well, I’ve got some practicing to do, with my new bowling shoes. What are you doing in your life that brings you joy? I’d love to hear what you’re up to. Catch y’all next time, I’m running to grab some coffee…join me soon!

Chasing a Dream

Growing up I wanted to be doctor, a body builder, a truck driver (go figure… I don’t even have a regular driver’s license), a social worker, and so on. Using my imagination as a child, my ultimate dream was to help people. Obviously, I couldn’t figure out what direction I wanted to go. Needless to say, I didn’t choose any of those career paths… I’m not even in a field that is remotely close.

I’m a full-time nonprofit professional and part-time blogger (for now). I have a BA in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism, a minor in English, and a MS in Leadership with a focus on Community. My career path shifted a bit last year, where I went from having my “dream job” to transitioning into a completely different sector of the nonprofit world. If you stick around long enough, you’ll be able to follow along and piece everything together.

During this season of transition, my Wife, JD, was also transitioning within her career… or should I say following her dream of becoming a Soldier in the United States Army. Talk about a proud Wife (points fingers towards myself)! I have always known her to go above and beyond, but this was the icing on the cake… and I LOVE cake. I knew this meant that I should be follower and set out to find my true purpose in life. It took me a while, but I found it… or at least I think so.

I did a little bit of freelancing for a local neighborhood newspaper and I believe that sparked my interest back into writing. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but never knew exactly in what capacity I wanted to write.

So, you may have guessed it by now. Yes, I want to write! Recently, I attended a conference and one of the speaker’s focus was “chasing your wildest dreams” and I knew at that moment that I had to stop procrastinating, waiting on the right time, and just do it. I came back home feeling empowered and ready! As it seems, the time was now or never.

I chose now and guess what ya’ll? I’m finally chasing a dream and I encourage you to get started with yours today, not tomorrow. Don’t put it off anymore and stop with the excuses!

Until next time, I have some writing to do and I need more coffee, so let’s all stop procaffeinating!
