Cleaning Out My Closet

After finding out where our where our First Duty Station will be, I slowly began to devise a plan to begin packing and getting ready for our big move. The time has finally come… time definitely flies when you’re having fun, right? I’ve been known to collect and keep everything, because it’s cute or I “think” I’ll use again, wear it when I lose weight or give it away at some point. Yeah, I am that kind of person (hangs head low). Well, I’m putting an end to that shit… because of new beginnings. I don’t want, nor do I need, to take extra stuff with me into our new home. The plan is to start fresh, so pardon me while I start cleaning out my closet.

Yes, I know I’m a little late to the Spring cleaning party or even separating everything and keeping the things that truly spark joy. If I would have jumped on that wagon, everything I owned would have sparked joy at that particular moment. A part of me is glad I didn’t do it then, so doing it when I’m ready was perfect for me. I know, I know it’s a mental thing and I wouldn’t have been mentally prepared to do it.

We also have a storage unit that has all of our belongings in it, but I had a room full of stuff that I’ve used, or should I say accumulated over the last nine months.
When you do Spring cleaning or plan for a big move, how do devise your plan? Do you #Konmari that shit or just go to town and throw it all away? Alright, I’m gonna get to work, because I have a lot of stuff and I should have done this… yesterday!

Ps. I can imagine my wife sipping her coffee and shaking her head in disbelief as she’s reading this. She knows me best and doesn’t believe me, but I have to start somewhere and this is the perfect way to make that happen.

This Brings Joy To My Life

Over the last few months, I have slowly tapped into a few things that bring joy to my life. Towards the end of March, when I visited my wife she took me bowling with her a Battle Buddies. I was a nervous wreck, more so because I was afraid I’d make a fool of myself and let’s be honest… I thought I’d break a nail. I can’t tell you the last time I’d been bowling, perhaps college. I didn’t do as well as I thought I would, but I pushed myself to at least try and get out of my comfort zone. I had fun nonetheless and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to do it more often. My wife and her Battle Buddies made it their weekend hobby to hit up the bowling alley just about every weekend.

The perfect shot!

Fast forward to April, when she asked me what I wanted for my birthday in May. I usually don’t ask for anything in particular, but this time I told her I wanted my own bowling shoes and personal bag (to match hers, of course) and to go bowling with her Battle Buddies when I came to visit. Well, my amazing wife definitely delivered on the birthday wishes and got me the perfect pair of bowling shoes, personal bag for them, and an awesome afternoon of bowling with her Battle Besties… Yep, they’ve been promoted- friends turned family for sure! I can’t believe it has taken 32 years for me to realize all the things that bring joy to my life, but I am here for it and ready to put fear aside, chase my dreams, and let things happen naturally.

My very own pair of bowling shoes and bag… so much joy!

Can you believe I won the first game? Yeah, me either! Everyone joked that it was my new shoes and I believed them after a few times they said it and of course a few strikes later. I’m excited to tap into other things that truly brings joy to my life, but definitely looking forward to joining a bowling league once we get settled at our First Duty Station (FDS). We decided it would be a perfect Friday Date night, to join just a fun league… nothing too serious just yet.

Yes, we are always super matchy matchy!

It has been awesome to find something that brings so much joy to my life, like bowling does! Well, I’ve got some practicing to do, with my new bowling shoes. What are you doing in your life that brings you joy? I’d love to hear what you’re up to. Catch y’all next time, I’m running to grab some coffee…join me soon!

Chasing a Dream

Growing up I wanted to be doctor, a body builder, a truck driver (go figure… I don’t even have a regular driver’s license), a social worker, and so on. Using my imagination as a child, my ultimate dream was to help people. Obviously, I couldn’t figure out what direction I wanted to go. Needless to say, I didn’t choose any of those career paths… I’m not even in a field that is remotely close.

I’m a full-time nonprofit professional and part-time blogger (for now). I have a BA in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism, a minor in English, and a MS in Leadership with a focus on Community. My career path shifted a bit last year, where I went from having my “dream job” to transitioning into a completely different sector of the nonprofit world. If you stick around long enough, you’ll be able to follow along and piece everything together.

During this season of transition, my Wife, JD, was also transitioning within her career… or should I say following her dream of becoming a Soldier in the United States Army. Talk about a proud Wife (points fingers towards myself)! I have always known her to go above and beyond, but this was the icing on the cake… and I LOVE cake. I knew this meant that I should be follower and set out to find my true purpose in life. It took me a while, but I found it… or at least I think so.

I did a little bit of freelancing for a local neighborhood newspaper and I believe that sparked my interest back into writing. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but never knew exactly in what capacity I wanted to write.

So, you may have guessed it by now. Yes, I want to write! Recently, I attended a conference and one of the speaker’s focus was “chasing your wildest dreams” and I knew at that moment that I had to stop procrastinating, waiting on the right time, and just do it. I came back home feeling empowered and ready! As it seems, the time was now or never.

I chose now and guess what ya’ll? I’m finally chasing a dream and I encourage you to get started with yours today, not tomorrow. Don’t put it off anymore and stop with the excuses!

Until next time, I have some writing to do and I need more coffee, so let’s all stop procaffeinating!
